While this game is only 7 years old, considering the next generation of gaming is nigh I believe it’s close enough. Final Fight Streetwise was released 10 years(in NA) after the last Final Fight game. The game was overlooked mainly because the Xbox 360 was already out and PS3 was on the horizon. Built by the now disbanded Studio 8, this was also the first Final Fight made in the USA. The game was great with the exception of camera issues. Otherwise a great and often underrated game. The story is really good and ties in with the previous Final fight games. There is a few unlockables such as characters for the “arcade mode” as well as a terribly ported version of the Final Fight Arcade ROM (Suggestion: Stick to the double impact version). How awesome is it? Watch the video and find out!

I am not sure when exactly the bug caught me, but I always was an avid Retro gamer. I never ever put my SNES away or boxed it up in some closet somewhere. It’s my work horse and it still is today. But it was around 2009 that I started to crave ALL the games of my past. I had envisioned a medium-large library of games, highlighted by my Super Nintendo collection of boxes and unboxed games. All of which were games I wanted when I was a child but could never own. But now that I was and adult who was unmarried (yet not lonely), had no children, no debt and a lot of disposable income. I find most of my peers of my generation becoming adult children at the end of their 20s and early 30s. Quarter life crisis possibly? Probably. But no alert for reason did not stop me from going on an epic game buying binge that lasted nearly 2 years.

I was eBay’s best fucking customer

. People like Victor always used to question my dishing out MONEY for games at eBay prices when I could have them at thrift store prices. Thing is Thrift stores have never been good to me! As a matter of fact I got downright-fucked there. I never had luck there EVER. The n64 I got from one was probably the only console that ever worked. I still have controllers I never tested from that time as well. Anyways. My friends had much better luck at their Thrift store binges but all I ever left those stores with was empty promises and feeling more drawn to my online options. The Local stores in Toronto were overcharging quite a bit for their stock those days but it was available if you didn’t feel like waiting 3-5 weeks for your games from abroad. There were other stores outside of town but without a vehicle, it was difficult getting out to them. But they are great to go to when you can! Plus the sellers are much nicer outside of town & the prices are far better than those in Toronto. When I get the chance to go out there I always end up with CA$60 worth of games.

The Beginning of The Retro Fungeon

But without the availability to go out of town, online was the best to go. At the time I had discovered that my local Buy/Sell forum as well as Kijiji were starting to look like better options. Best part was the people selling in bulk. people I remember getting a SNES Kicker console with 12 games for less than 90 bucks. It was a pain in the ass to meet the man but it was well worth it. But eBay was still main contributor. It has have united me with import consoles and coveted consoles. One of my very very first eBay video game purchases were 2 Sega Saturn Fightsticks and Street Fighter Alpha 2… all factory sealed. Another thing was the strong Canadian dollar also led me more to online sales as well and imports. There was a time I was getting one package a week for 8 months straight. It was downright obsessive.

I spent hours in front of computer monitors searching for the lost treasures of my youth. Some that I had anticipated playing and holding in my hands again. Some of which were very rare and expensive. But I really didn’t care.

I had a herd of white wales to catch and my harpoon gun had a sniper scope.

But I wasn’t throwing endless amounts of money at retro games. I always looked for the bargains. Most of the games in my collection were purchased for $5-$10 with the exception of the rarities. Combined shipping was also a big incentive to buying in bulk. Especially sellers who offered shipping to Canada for US$4.99 and every game there after was free. Every time I bought one game from such a seller I always looked through their stock to see if there was anything else I could bundle-in cheap. There is only maybe 3-4 items in my collection I spent (what I would consider) a large amount of money on. But I found all my bargains online at the time. I have looked recently actually but I must say the selection online these days is horrendous at best with outrageous prices. I am unsure I could ever go on one of these binges again. But never say never.

By the end of 2010 I had accumulated a massive collection. which grew from 4 consoles to 8. I no longer had 12 games, I had 120 games. One thing that saved me a lot of money was buying loose games (games that are unboxed and have no manual). They can often be anywhere between $5-$20 cheaper than a complete in box copy. But it was a blog post on Cheap Ass Gamer that changed the look of my collection… forever…

Frank plays through one of his favourite side-scrolling Beat-em-ups Final Fight (on xbox 360 ’cause it’s easier & better to capture). In the first part of this series Frank plays through The Slums & The Subways (Rounds 1 & 2) plus the bonus round!

It’s been a few months but the first episode of RetroGame Monday will finally be up Next Monday at Midnight. I have been wanting to do this weekly series for a very long time now and I am very happy to announce that the first episode is done. While there is no gameplay in this particular episode, the next episodes will in fact have Video. Every week I will be taking a game out of my game collection and make an episode of it. I am greatly looking forward to sharing these with all of you.
